The safe navigation of survey vessels during systematic hydrographic survey operations for the protection of craft, personnel and all equipment on board and to ensure that craft is seaworthy and in class at all times.
Position outputs:
- To manage and maintain the craft, documentation and all mandatory safety equipment to ensure the craft remains in class and in accordance with SAMSA regulations and legal requirements at any given time.
- Prepare craft for towing and road worthiness of trailer and vehicle. Towing of craft to various slipways in the Ports of South Africa.
- Launch and land of survey craft in all Ports in South Africa.
- Assist Hydrography in calibration of hydrographic survey equipment.
- To navigate on pre-determined lines to ensure that all data logged or captured by the hydrography during survey ops is accurate.
- Liaising with external contractors to ensure that maintenance and repairs are carried out on all survey craft within set time periods and to specification.

- Daily supervising of crew - time management, safety on board approval of leave, discipline as well as periodic inspection of certificates to ensure validation.
- Planning in advance and supervision of annual lay up of survey craft as well as signing off on satisfactory completion.
- Daily monitoring of weather conditions and liaising with hydrography to optimize production.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Grade 12
- Able Seaman certificate: 24 months
- Certificate of competence as skipper (less than 25 GRT) SAMSA
- Coastal Skipper is limited to 40 nautical miles from shore.
- 2 - 5 years of experience
Competencies:
Knowledge & skills required
- Craft navigation.
- Drivers licence B with towing.
- Familiar with all harbour regulations.
- Determine safe sea working conditions.
- Good communication skills.
- Analytical skills.
- Previous experience in a similar environment would be advantageous.
