What is a learnership?

Learnerships are one of South Africa’s most popular, and cost-effective, routes to tertiary education. Learnership programmes are based on practical experience rather than theory and concentrate on providing students with a foundation of skills they can use while they continue with their studies, as well as being a potential stepping stone into full-time employment.

Learnership programmes typically take place at private or government organisations that offer practical experience opportunities for aspiring young professionals such as entry-level managerial positions.

How do I apply for a learnership?

If you’re under 30 years old, have a high school education and wish to further your studies or obtain vocational training at a South African tertiary institution, there is a good chance that you are eligible for a learnership.

Learnerships are government-funded programmes that aim to provide students with work experience while they earn their degree, diploma or certificate. In order to be accepted into a learnership programme, you will need to fill out an application form and attend an interview.

What do you get with a learnership?

You get to learn a skill from some of South Africa’s leading companies; You get a salary. In return, you get to do some work for your employer and you agree that you will work for them for a specified period after you finish your learnership (usually 12 or 24 months). Your employer invests in your training and development, giving you on-the-job training as well as formal classroom instruction.

Learners have an opportunity to gain skills and experience while learning directly from more experienced workers.

Can I get a job through the programme?

The key thing to look for is its relevance. How does your current field of study relate to what you want to do? Do your hard skills match up with your end goal? Your career counsellor or learning facilitator will help you figure out which job or industry might be a good fit. That’s why it’s important to tell them everything that comes into your head and not leave out any skills, even if they don’t seem related to what you want to do.
