Role Summary

The Clinical Nurse is a professional responsible for the assessment, planning, and implementation of individualized and holistic nursing care for patients, their families, or the community, either performed directly or indirectly. The incumbent ultimately coordinates patient care within the framework of the multi-disciplinary health team. The Clinical Nurse fulfils this role through the application of scientifically based nursing theories and processes, treating patients as physical, social, and spiritual individuals.

The role also involves the use of educational and technical means applicable to healthcare practice. The incumbent is tasked with assessing, planning, and implementing advanced nursing care in a specialized field, by standard nursing care procedures as set out in the standards and procedures of MPH, as well as nursing care theory and medical direction .

In emergencies, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for initiating, directing, and maintaining emergency treatment (RESUS) for any patient or person in any ward or department of the hospital, diagnosing and treating the emergency patient quickly, effectively, and efficiently within the scope of practice. The incumbent actively participates as a professional member of the multi-disciplinary team in evaluating, developing, and implementing healthcare plans and treatment regimens.

Effective communication and interaction with patients' families and healthcare professionals is essential, with the Clinical Nurse acting as a patient advocate when necessary to ensure optimal patient care. The Clinical Nurse ensures clear communication between nursing management and the unit to address and eliminate patient care problems or issues. The incumbent is committed to ensuring the provision of a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Additionally, the role involves coordinating with the Clinical Facilitation Department and other members of the multi- disciplinary team to meet and acknowledge the ongoing educational needs of nursing staff. The Clinical Nurse works effectively and cooperatively with others, establishing and maintaining mutually beneficial working relationships within the healthcare team.

Inherent Requirements

  • Grade 12/ Matric Qualification is essential.
  • Registered as a ProfessionalNursewith the South African Nursing Council or equivalent NQF level 7 qualification
  • Relevant experience in the Emergency Department would be advantageous.
  • Thorough knowledge of general nursing theory, practice, and understanding of legislation about the specific business environment.
