A position has become available for a Quality Controller - Fresh Produce to join our dynamic team, based in Mount Edgecombe at the Perishables Warehouse.
Job description
To receive and examine the quality of stock items received from Suppliers and ensure that quality standards and procedures are met and aligned with legislation and customer specification.
Key Performance Areas
- Receiving of Freshline / Produce stock into the Warehouse in line with the standard operating practices.
- Provide leadership to the Receiving and Quality teams.

- Keep a record of checks performed and complete daily reports with recommendations for improvement.
- Monitor quality variations amongst Suppliers and notify relevant Buyers.
- Participate in Fresh/Receiving team meetings.
- Check the quality of Supplier stock in terms of damages and expiry dates.
- Communicate poor product quality to other stakeholders.
- Complete claims for incorrect stock, shortages, quality problems and damaged stock.
- Investigate claims prior to processing poor quality related claims from Retailers.
- Identify areas contributing to poor quality and put corrective measures in place.
- Record and present updated statistics regarding Warehouse stock quality issues.
- Develop trend reports on Supplier behaviour.
- Implement and support innovations in the quality space e.g., QC APP.
- Oversee Quality across the Warehouse.
- Enforce quality standards in line with the regulatory framework.
- Assist in developing and maintaining BOPs on Quality issues within the operation.
- Overall responsibility and accountability for quality within the Fresh Produce department.
- Effective handling of customer complaints and follow up with the Suppliers.
- Manage the performance of the Quality Control Clerks and Fresh Produce Receiving Clerks.
- Prepare and publish management reports.
- Conduct team meetings.
- Maintain and conduct grievance and disciplinary procedures when required
- Manage staff performance through ROI process.
- Ensure that housekeeping standards are maintained.
- Enforce adherence to Best Operating Practices.
- Assist in other areas of the department when required
- Work out staff timecards on Computer System
Minimum requirements
- Matric
- Relevant qualification in Food Technology /Biotechnology Consumer Science in Food and Nutrition / Agricultural Quality Control qualification essential

- 2 Years fresh foods experience (Produce/Bakery/Meat/Home Meal Replacement)
- Team player
- Good communications skills (written and verbal)
- Enthusiastic and assertive
- Understanding of FSMS (Food Safety Management Systems)
- Auditing (Internal/external)
- Customer care
- Must be able to work overtime, shifts, public holidays and weekends
- Accuracy and attention to details
- Sound leadership and administrative skills
- Deadline orientated
