Main Purpose:
To issue and dispatch a safe supply of blood and blood products to Blood Banks and Emergency Banks, ensuring that product expiries are kept to a minimum. Label tested blood and safely discard unsuitable units. Assist in mentoring new incumbents.
Responsibilities include:
- Receives and captures daily bloodstock numbers from the blood banks on the BMS.
- Assesses the available stock and if sufficient, issues blood and frozen bloodstock, to meet the blood bank's daily requirements.
- Inspects units before issue and on return for haemolysis, clots, date bled and expiry.
- Confirms temperature of incoming and outgoing blood and blood products, to determine cold chain compliance
- Rotates stock effectively to avoid unnecessary expiries (first in, first out).
- Discards excess/expired bloodstock
- Completes visual check of red cell units for clots/haemolysis, to assess suitability for use.
- Coordinates daily cleaning and decontamination.
- Assesses the available stock and issues blood to meet the blood banks' demands when local blood banks experience shortages/emergency cases
- Complies with Occupational Health and Safety Act and Safety Work Instructions with regard to proper use of personal protective equipment and prevention of accidents and incidents etc.

Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12
- Medical Technician in Blood Transfusion/Laboratory Assistant
- Computer literate
- Must be registered with HPCSA as a Laboratory assistant.
- Must have 2 years post-qualification experience.
- Driver’s licence (advantageous)
