The Pharmacist Assistant – Qualified Post Basic is responsible to support the Clinical Pharmacist in providing access to optimal pharmaceutical care to the patients.

To provide call centre support to members and providers.

Key work output and accountabilities

  • Member script escalation management
  • An additional supply of medication approvals
  • Paper claim assessment management
  • Campaign management (flu vaccine)
  • Medication formulary assistance/compliance
  • Audit compliance
  • Prescriber script escalations management
  • Provider script escalations management
  • Client assistance at Call Centre.
  • Monitor Cost Per Event within the Hospital environment
  • Ensure cost containment of drugs in example: special motivation drugs, duration of treatment and generic substitution
  • Monitor Managed Healthcare Variances in per diem contracts.

  • Increase generic usage of commonly used products (including antibiotics, CVS drugs etc) within the hospital
  • Implement standardisation of contentious surgical products.
  • Be active and instrumental in implementing systems and writing Standard Operating Procedures for all services offered, including: Antibiotic Policies, Infectious disease protocols and accreditation policies and procedures
  • Plan and implement Public Health awareness campaigns, such as Breast Awareness Week, Heart Week, and Pharmacy Week etc.
  • Develop educational literature, such as Patient Information Leaflets (PIL) or Pharmacy Newsletter or Journals
  • Monitor clinical trials (if applicable) that may be conducted by the facility, provided that required procedures and training are complied with, before the commencement of clinical trials
  • Review and evaluate reporting from pharmacy providers and benefit management services
  • Provide monthly and ad hoc reporting to management on operational matters within the Pharmacy benefit management
  • Related administrative tasks pertaining to document flow and house-keeping tasks
  • Complete other functions as deemed necessary by the Clinical or Operations Manager
  • Verify manual medication claims received from doctors, pharmacies and patients
  • Compile and Interpret spreadsheet reports for business trends pertaining to medicine control
  • Stay updated with new developments in pharmaceutical field.
  • Ensure a safety and learning culture by loading, any medication error on the database and take action to avoid further similar medication errors
  • Document and complete all queries, whether received in writing or telephonically with minimal delay.
  • Reference and load any query or problem encountered, researched and resolved on the Netcare Information Database to be accessible to all Netcare Pharmacists
  • Development and implement quality improvement programmes in areas of clinical significance, e.g. medication errors
  • Participate in In-house training programmes and implement learning.
  • Maintain liaison relationships with medical and nursing staff by providing timely information pertaining to pharmaceutical supplies, drug usage, compatibility etc.
  • Advising and interacting with internal physicians on drug therapy, inherent toxicity of drugs and side effects, appropriate dosing and patient care plans or outcomes
  • Actively participate as a member of a team to achieve goals
  • Improve staff retention by encouraging participating and enthusiasm of clinical pharmacy from all pharmacy staff
  • Active involvement in own professional development to maintain a satisfactory level of skill and knowledge
  • Keep up to date with Netcare’s evolving policies and procedures
  • Work effectively and co-operatively with others to establish and maintain good working relationships that are mutually beneficial.
  • Create and maintain a positive environment where the differences of others are recognized, understood, and valued, so that all can reach their full potential and maximize their contributions.
  • Develop collaborative relationships to help accomplish work goal.

Skills profile

Education

Essential

  • Grade 12
  • Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council
  • Qualified Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant
  • Intermediate computer proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite
